Tiny, wide-eyed, and full of mystery, Gursky’s Spectral Tarsier is one of the most fascinating primates found only on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Weighing less than a bar of soap and able to leap over 3 meters in a single bound, this nocturnal creature is a true marvel of nature.
Gursky's Spectral Tarsier
Habitat
Gursky's Tarsiers live in primary and secondary tropical forests, especially in areas with dense understory and bamboo groves. They often sleep in hollow trees or dense vines during the day and emerge at dusk to hunt.
Special Features
With its huge, unblinking eyes and rotating head (almost 180 degrees!), this tiny primate has evolved for life in the dark. Its long fingers and strong hind legs make it an expert climber and jumper.
Diet
A true carnivore among primates, the tarsier feeds exclusively on insects, spiders, small lizards, and sometimes even small birds. It silently stalks its prey before launching a rapid ambush.
Conservation Status
Gursky’s Spectral Tarsier is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat fragmentation and human encroachment. Though populations still survive in certain areas, their numbers are decreasing without careful conservation.
Did You Know?
A tarsier’s eyes are so big, each one is larger than its brain! These specialized eyes help them see even in complete darkness.
