The little egret (Egretta garzetta) is a graceful small heron belonging to the family Ardeidae. Adults typically measure 55–65 cm in length with a wingspan of 88–106 cm and weigh between 350–550 grams. Their plumage is usually pure white, featuring a slender black beak, long black legs, and, in western populations, striking yellow feet. During the breeding season, adults display elegant long plumes on the nape and breast, which are used in courtship displays.
Little egrets are highly adaptable aquatic birds, commonly found in a wide range of wetland habitats such as marshes, riverbanks, lakeshores, coastal lagoons, and rice fields. They favor shallow waters, both fresh and saltwater, where they hunt for small fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and insects. Their hunting techniques include standing motionless to ambush prey or stirring up water with their feet to flush out hidden food.
These birds often breed colonially, sometimes alongside other waterbirds, building platform nests of sticks in trees, bushes, or reed beds near water. Both parents share responsibilities in incubating the clutch of three to five bluish-green eggs and feeding the chicks, which fledge at about six weeks old.
The little egret has a broad distribution, with populations found across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Indonesia, including the Minahasa region, the subspecies E. g. nigripes is commonly observed in wetlands and rice fields, making it a frequent sight for birdwatchers
