The Lime Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus), also known as the Common Lime or Chequered Swallowtail, is a widespread and striking butterfly species found throughout Asia, including Indonesia’s Minahasa region. Unlike many swallowtails, it lacks the characteristic tail extensions, boasting a wingspan of 80–100 mm. Its wings are predominantly black with broad, irregular yellow bands and numerous spots, including a distinctive red and blue spot near the hindwing’s tornal area.

This butterfly is highly adaptable, thriving in diverse habitats such as savannahs, gardens, fallow lands, and evergreen forests, often near streams and riverbeds. It is an avid mud-puddler and frequent visitor of flowers, showing a preference for smaller herbaceous blooms over larger plants. The Lime Swallowtail exhibits varied flight patterns-from slow and cautious in the cool morning to fast and low during the heat of the day-and relies on its quick flight to evade predators.
The caterpillars primarily feed on citrus plants, especially lime trees, making this butterfly closely associated with citrus groves. Its widespread distribution and adaptability make it a common yet captivating subject for nature lovers and photographers.
